BRAZIL 500 YEARS - TO RECYCLE IS OUR DUTY

  For this project, Roberto intends to travel on board of a sailing boat constructed with recycled materials (paper, plastic, iron, aluminium, and others), leaving from Florianopolis towards Porto Seguro, Bahia, where the festivities for the anniversary of 500 years of the discovery of Brazil will take place. This trip will also serve to greet the arrival of the Schürman family, that will be returning from their round the world trip trough the same route the Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães took centuries ago. On his return trip to Santa Catarina, Roberto will keep company to the family of intrepid adventures on their way back home.The main objective of this enterprise is to educate people of the importance of using the natural resources rationally with a view towards a sustainable development and the recycling of materials. To attract attention to these issues, the adventure will take place around a festive time for the whole country,will commemorate the safe return of the Schürman family, and will be carried out on a boat made with recycled material. He will also be sending images and information to people that will be "connected" on the trip.

 

Technical details of the journey

   With its departure date fixed for the 23rd of March 2000,also Florianopolis anniversary, the sailing boat "Folha" (leaf) , constructed under material recycling criteria, leaves to Porto Seguro, Bahia. Once there it will participate on the celebrations of 500 years of Brazil’s "discovery", and will take part on the fleet that will welcome the navigators on board of the "Aysso" - the Schürmann - that after two years and a half following the route of the Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães , will be arriving in Bahia as well.From there it will be sailing southwards, following the Schürmann on their return home , to Santa Catarina.
   
Roberto will sail for aproximately 6000 kilometres , round trip, with strategic stopovers in Bahia and other cities useful for the events promotion : São Francisco do Sul - SC; Paranagua - PR; Santos- SP, Rio de Janeiro- RJ; Vitoria- ES and Porto Seguro- BA. As mentioned above, the main goal of this journey is to promote the well being of all human beings, and attempt to raise the consciousness of people in regards to the necessity of making better uses of natural resources as well , stopping environmental pollution and inform on available technologies for material recycling.
